ELECTRICAL SUBSTATIONS
The spread of electrification of the railways continues to grow over time, either with overhead lines or a third rail at the side of the track. Some railway lines were electrified at the start of the twentieth century, but it was really the modernization plan of the 1950s that saw the start of the electrification revolution. Not surprisingly, electrified trains need electricity and just like the power supply to your home, it is stepped down from a higher voltage. To do this, a substation is required.
Electrical substations for the railway are usually placed right beside the railways that they serve. They are an interesting structure to be modelled, as some of the transformers are often out in the open. Bachmann Scenecraft makes an OO gauge substation that has all three of the key elements: a brick building; transformers and electrical equipment in the open; security fencing to keep the public out (and thus safe). The rectangular footprint of this modest all-inone model would be ideal for locating at the lineside.
It is not too difficult to make your own electrical substation. The brick building is an easy prospect as they are not usually architecturally stimulating; a brick box with a few windows and doors, plus a flat roof, is a simple scratch-building project, ideal for someone who has never tried making a building before.
The electrical equipment is a little more challenging. Transformers with their cooling pipes would be hard to scratch-build. A shortcut is to buy model transformers that are intended as wagon or lorry loads. If you want a bigger transformer than the ones available for your chosen scale, try using the ones for the next scale up, as there is nothing on them to make them look out of scale. Wires and insulators can be made from scraps of wire and plastic.
